Cosmix 37 – Nils Olav

Cosmix 37 comes from Nixi Music label head Nils Olav.

Norwegian born Nils Olav, a vinyl addict since a teenager, began producing music and DJing under the name Nils Noa in his late teens. At only 22 he became the first Norwegian artist to release a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix - one of the most acclaimed DJ mix platforms of that time.

After touring the world as a DJ and promoting events in Oslo, around 2012 Nils began to seek a new direction. A  fortuitous meeting with Brazilian musician Chandra Lacombe changed his path of music. Nils found himself immersed in an underground culture of medicine music – musicians who were aligned with deep spiritual values and time spent learning from tribes of the Amazon and teachings from the Central and South Americas, as well a traditions from the Eastern philosophies. In 2018 he started record label Nixi Music, alongside producer and multi instrumentalist Txai Fernando. The label is now home to medicine musicians including Curawaka, Ayla Schafer, Chandra Lacombe, Flowers of the Forest, amongst others, and has featured remixes from artists including Mose, J.Pool and Steffen Ki.

“Meeting Chandra Lacombe was very special, he had a huge spiritual influence on me. And being around so many master musicians the last years with Nixi Music, I have found so much musical inspiration. They have inspired me to land in a place where my spirituality and music can exist side by side. The last years, it has felt natural to come back to my birth name – Nils Olav – for releasing music. This new musical world I have come into has opened my ears in many ways and to merge electronic sounds with live performances from skilled musicians feels the most natural thing to do.”

Check below for the interview and mix !

Tell us about the mix -

It’s a mix some some old tunes I really like, and a bunch of remixes I have done. Some remixes are out, some will come out and one will never be released. I tried to make it as personal as possible.

Where was it recorded?

One take live on my turntables of course!   No.. On my laptop. In Norway. Ha ha ha!! :D

How would you like for people to feel when they listen to the mix?

First PLEASE use good pair of headphones or speakers to listen. How they feel is out of my control, but I hope and wish they feel good.

How has music helped to sculpt and guide you in life?

First music gave me so much inspiration in my teens, in my early 20s it lifted me around the globe to DJ, end of my 20s it almost destroyed me, and in my 30s it freed me, and lifted my spirit so much. Music has given me so many tools to help me on so many levels… So I am in deep gratitude to the magic of music.

Music is?

The most powerful tool in the world besides love.

What does the word cosmic mean to you?

Cosmic to me means limitless, inspiration, colours, and magic.

Please can you give us a cosmic piece of art, quote or book that moves you?

Quote “When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money”.

But I need to add a piece of art as well. A when I was in Florence a couple of years ago I saw a set of gilded bronze doors by artist Lorenzo Ghiberti for the Baptistery of the Florence Cathedral. Ghiberti worked on these doors for about 21 years, completing them in 1452. Thats dedication for your art!

What do you think is the role of the DJ in the modern world?

It’s sadly very overrated in a general sense. It’s a bit like the Kings New Clothes story. It’s long since I heard a DJ that blew me away. For me interesting “Djing” today is someone taking it a bit further (That’s not me just to be clear about that!). Adding instruments and other elements to the performance. All the music and technology is accessible now for so many. So in a sense, how interesting is it to hear someone play other peoples music in 2024? I know I might sound like a grumpy old man now, but a good performance with well mastered instruments touches me so much more than someone playing and mixing on 2 CDJs these days.

How can we make the world a better place?

Take care of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually, then support and help the people around you at the best of your capability. We all have the capacity to change the world, but we need to start with our self first. Some tend to forget that first bit in the chaos of things…

Are there any causes you support that you would like to bring awareness?

There is not one cause in that sense, but I pray each day for all the innocent children around the globe suffering from immature and tragic conflicts happening every day caused by power hungry old men…

Each pineapple plant produces just one fruit at a time. The fruit grows from the centre of a leafy plant and can take up to two years to mature!

Music is the answer.
