Cosmix 0.8 comes from Mr. G – ” Love one another and realise we’re all different, yet all have an opinion, just like we all have belly buttons.”
Mr. G, aka Colin McBean, is a humble and true man of music. His prolific releases via his own Pheonix G imprint (including his new album ‘Night on the Town’), Bass Culture, Rekids and Running Back, are created in perfection with the relentless intention to make your body move… and maybe something subtle laced through to make you think a little different, too. His live show is to be seen, there are very few people that really feel and love the vibe like he does. From the moments that make you want to get down, to the moments that make you want to fly; music and energy pulse through every part of his being.
I have known Mr. G for a long time, but lost contact until he recently played his live show for Paradise at DC10 in Ibiza. I worked on the PR for his ‘Get It Got It Good’ EP (Lightz was a big one), released on Defected back in 2001, when I was a fresh pink haired 19 year old, obsessed with dance music and losing myself on the dance floor. A few years later, when I worked with Darren Emerson and Tim Deluxe for Underwater Records, he popped up again, both Darren and Tim used to love playing Mr. G’s ‘Jet Black‘, which I loved, but never got a copy of. In 2010, I was working for Radioslave’s Rekids and got to work Mr. G’s debut solo album ‘Still Here’ and whilst working that blagged myself a copy of ‘Jet Black’… It’s one of my favorite dance records of all time; subtle, sexy and totally in its own vibe. When I bumped into him and his lovely wife at DC10 in August, we had the best chat about the magic of music and what I was trying to do with Cosmic Pineapple. A couple weeks later, I asked him if he would be open to doing a Cosmix for the site and he immediately agreed and sent over a love-fueled disco, funk and soul mix, perfect to turn on and get down.
I hope you enjoy the special mix of Mr. G’s influences and memories, and his wicked interview below. Respect and gratitude, always, to Mr. G!

Tell us about the mix
Just backtracking the sounds I love that hold strong memories for me, plus a great feel good factor.
How did you approach making it?
Borrowed a 1210, only have one deck in the studio as I don’t want to be distracted to DJ instead of workin’. Just did what felt interesting and right.
How would you like for people to feel when they hear this music?
Relax with a big drink, recollecting your thoughts, with this to help you along with someone you hold dear.
Music is?
My life (period).
How has music helped to sculpt and guide you in life?
It’s all I know and live for, it’s my life blood, it is my very self… No music no me.
What does the word ‘cosmic’ mean to you?
Something spiritual, moving and for sure deep! Also the cosmos is all around us, it’s what you make it! Namaste!
Please can you tell us a piece of art that moves you -
Rodin ‘Gates of Hell’. It’s an amazing piece with more than one version dotted around the world. When you stand before it you can’t fail to be moved by its sheer beauty.
What do you think is the role of the DJ in the modern world?
To have fun and at the same time educate all you can… But for many it’s about fame, fortune and egos.
How can we make the world a better place?
Love one another and realise we’re all different, yet all have an opinion, just like we all have belly buttons.
Your favourite cosmic website?
A website is not the place for my cosmic vibes. I feel just living day to day, practicing peace and love with good karma, is where it’s at for me.
Your starsign?
Leo, the old lion cat with a big roar!
A pineapple fact?
Love it as it’s part of my fave rum cocktail ‘Mai Tai’ – wouldn’t be the same without it. Best with a nice sweet pine from Jamaica.
A music fact?
My fave music is a melancholy ballad!
