A monthly journey into to the weirder, wilder side of the TED archives. September 2016 – Johann Hari ‘Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong’
“The goal was to make sure that every addict in Portugal had something to get out of bed for in the morning.”
Working on the assumption that a line or quick morning smack shot isn’t part of the ‘something’, this radical yet undeniably sensible step has seen Portugal slash their level of injected drug use by 50% in 15 years. We all know the War On Drugs was lost before the first shot was taken, so this is a timely perspective on how we might implement a more effective approach to the general problem of addiction.
“The opposite of addiction is connection.”
