Raw chocolate coconut butter – a rich, chocolatey experience that melts in your mouth. Organic and vegan.
Ostara’s stone ground Cocotella is amazing! It is also ethical for the environment and contains the good fats your body needs. And you can just tell by the taste and feeling that positive energy goes into making the product.
Cocotella’s ingredients are Organic Coconut, Organic Sundried Cacao Beans, Organic Coconut Sugar, Organic Vanilla Bean and Himalayan Salt. The ethos behind the makers is ‘Mythology for Modernity’. ‘Ostara’ is named after the ancient Goddess associated with the Spring Equinox, representing rebirth, fertility and new beginnings.
From the Ostara site:
“We craft our food from only the finest raw organic ingredients. These are slowly stone ground in small batches to draw out flavor while creating a silky smooth texture without grit or dryness. You have not had coconut butter until you’ve tried our stone ground products.”
Now, The Philospher’s Stoneground, located in the East Bay of San Francisco, has taken over producing Cocotella (they also make Sprouted Almond Butter, amongst other goodness). Their mission is intelligent nourishment: “spreading consciousness and nourishing all Life through delicious food designed for human consumption.”
I would now use this instead of Nutella. Especially on learning that Nutella includes way too much sugar and palm oil, which adds to the deforestation of oil palms, home to many indigenous tribes and species including the orangutan and the sumatran tiger (which are becoming extinct due to palm oil deforestation!). I have done some research and the makers of Nutella say they are taking steps to make their palm oil more sustainable, but as with a lot of big bucks companies, how intensely they are following this is questionable. Palm oil is also used in so many household foods and products and it is up to us to check ingredients and use ethically. Consumer creates demand and if we all step up and take note of what is good for the planet and its inhabitants, this can change. If your product contains palm oil, make sure it is RSPO certified. Check more on palm oil deforestation here.

Thanks so much for writing about our Cocotella, Kim! We are using direct trade, beyond organic cacao from Nicaragua. This reminds me that I should write about the details of our sourcing on our website!
We are in the process of searching for even more ethical and regeneratively-grown sweeteners, such as palm sugar resulting from the amazing reforestation work of Willie Smits and his Masarang project in Indonesia: http://www.masarang.nl/en/news/index.jsp?USMID=201&newsitem=703
We hadn’t thought to market it as a more ethical and sustainable alternative to Nutella as well as being healthier! Thanks for framing it this way.
best,
Tim
