Cranialsacral Therapy

A career in electronic music lead Simon Baker to develop severe tinnitus. A friend recommended Cranialsacral Therapy to alleviate the symptoms and so profound was the effect, that it lead Simon to train to become a practitioner.  Here he explains more on the benefits and effects of this alternative therapy.

What is cranial sacral therapy ?

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, yet profound, holistic treatment intended to relieve stress, trauma, pain, tensions and restrictions. Through light touch, Craniosacral Therapy triggers an individual’s self-healing mechanism to help reunite the mind and body, and to restore harmony, vitality and balance.

It works on a very profound and subtle level, influencing the core of the system. Helping to release deep-rooted causes as well as surface issues, it often leaves people feeling in a very deep and relaxed state. Suitable for everyone from newborns to the elderly, it can help with many different conditions due to its non-invasive nature.

What is the relation between the cranial and the sacral?

They are closely linked as they top and bottom of the central nervous system essentially The Cranium (the head/brain) and the Sacrum which is a bone at the base of the spine.

How did you first become aware of it?

When a friend of mine mentioned it could be good for my tinnitus. I had never heard of it until then.

Why and how did you become a practitioner? Tell us your history coming from the rave to this.

Working in music as a Producer, Audio Engineer and DJ, I have been surrounded by loud music for years and as a result I developed severe tinnitus, which I assumed was from the continual noise.

After having my ears checked, a friend of mine recommended Craniosacral Therapy, explaining that it can help with calming the central nervous system which is directly related to the cranial nerves of the ears.

It was quite a life-changing experience for me. Not only did it reduce the ringing in my ears, but I felt like I could breathe again. The tinnitus didn’t disappear completely, but it subsided enough for me to feel calmer, more balanced and in control.

After a few treatments, I started feeling different in other ways. I felt more peaceful, more in-tune and more relaxed. I hadn’t realised how stressed and anxious my system was – not just from the tinnitus – but from everything in life that I was storing up. It became clear that emotions and physical tensions were triggering this ringing in my head.

I continued on this path and learned how to meditate, as well as practicing yoga and mindfulness. I began to see life with more clarity and through this new perspective; I found the link that was missing.

I wanted to share my knowledge and help others feel good, so began training as a Craniosacral Therapist at The College Of Craniosacral Therapy in London . I can safely say that this has, by far, been the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of my life to-date. I don’t hear the tinnitus anymore.

Tell us a fact about cranial sacral that blows your mind…

Fascial unwinding is a big part of craniosacral therapy. Whether it be the neck hip arm or leg. The fascia is a band or sheet of connective tissue, primarily collagen, beneath the skin that attaches, stabilises, encloses, and separates muscles and other internal organs)  Resolving profound debilitating trauma, chronic pain and restriction, musculo-skeletal injuries, emotional tension, or for overall integration of the body-mind, it can be very powerful.

Why should people do this?

Craniosacral Therapy is suitable for people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. Craniosacral Therapy is often beneficial for fragile or acutely painful conditions, as well as during pregnancy, after an operation, accident, fall or injury, and for young babies. But you don’t have to be ill or have any particular symptoms to benefit from it. The easing of life’s stresses and the increased sense of vitality and well-being that Craniosacral Therapy can bring are welcome at any time. It’s a very gentle yet profound therapy to help keep your health and wellbeing in balance. After a session people often feel super relaxed or a bit spacey or floaty after a session while feeling very content.
