‘Movember’ has not only helped to bring the moustache back in to fashion, but it has also – more importantly – become a men’s health movement, raising £402 million and funding over 1,000 programmes focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
Born from the idea of two Australian friends in 2003, The Movember Foundation is a global charity committed to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. As men proudly walk the streets showing their expressions of facial hair in November (and hopefully beyond), an underlying awareness to regularly check yourself and to look after yourself is happening.
The facts first:
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide (after skin cancer). Here for more.
Testicular cancer can develop in males of any age, including infants and elderly men. Almost half of all cases of testicular cancer are in men between the ages of 20 and 34. Here for more.
The results of poor mental health can be deadly. Globally, a man dies every minute from suicide. Men, regardless of age group, often don’t recognise when they’re experiencing a mental health issue, and may not be comfortable asking for help. The uncomfortable truth is that some stereotypical forms of masculinity are killing men. Here for more.
Physical inactivity is a big deal. It’s the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, causing 3.2 million deaths globally per year. Here for more.
There are many ways you can get involved to help the foundation’s work, including, growing a moustache.
